The Tray

I don't have any construction pictures up to this point in the project, but this does show a few things about it. First, it was built in my messy garage but that is beside the point. Next, one leg that is done is the conduit for the water. It is a much larger diameter pipe to carry the flow. The water goes in near that leg and up. Then it makes a 90 degree angle towards the middle. Next it goes down and forms a U-Shape to come up in the middle where the bottom of the bowl is. The jagged edges at the top were made by cutting styrofoam and placing the concrete over the top. There was also a pile of circular strofoam pieces to shape the bowl. In case you are wondering, yes, this is a very heavy piece, and you can see why that wood framing material is there in the next picture.

I had to have a bunch of neighbors, friends and relatives to move this from the garage out to the pit. Looks like we should have had some princess sitting in a chair on top of that as we carried it.

Another thing that is interesting about the picture is in the top center. There is a pulley system that I used to elevate this piece to the top of the garage before I added the legs. I built the main deck of the tray early in the season before I could take it outside for finishing. I had to get it out of the way to get my car in the garage so I rigged this to lift it and keep it above my car. I could have easily been one of those named for a Darwin Award in that it was nearly heavy enough to bring down the rafters and everything stored on top when I was under it. Luckily, it didn't happen.

We had to carefully lower it into the pit.

It had to be precisely located on top of the support system that is under the membrane to distribute the weight.

Next it was time for some adult beverages after a job well done.

Here is the scaffolding system I needed to be able to work on the top part of the tray. You can also see four elevated pieces on the top of the tray for birds to perch on. Didn't work and was never used that I noticed.

Lighting didn't do much to improve the looks of the fountain.

This is about the only bird that seemed to stop by for the fountain. I was sitting on our patio swing after, apparently, a hard day of painting. Was enjoying a glass of wine when this turkey happened to stop by. Stayed for quite a while before taking off.

This fountain was my biggest failures. I tried various pump sizes and couldn't really find one that worked perfectly. They had either too much flow and water boiled out of the pit, scared the birds, and blew water out of the pit with a lot of waste, or the water barely trickles over the edge. It was too large for the pit because of the waste and blocked our view of flowers on the other side. However, one of the things I have enjoyed on every fountain is taking a sledge hammer to it at the end of the season and breaking it to pieces. Not sure my garbage men enjoy picking up the concrete pieces but at least they do it.
