Spires

My friend, Jeff, helps me A LOT on my RichKern.com website. Luckily, he also lives in Lincoln and has helped with the installation of several of my "creations". This one is not as heavy as it looks but was a bit awkward and had to be carefully carried out to the pit and put in place.

This was created from a bunch of spherical styrofoam disks with different diameters. They are glued together with a PVC pipe up the middle. Then the disks were shaved to the shape I wanted. Next, chicken wire was stretched around them and hypertufa was placed on the outside of the spires. I made four of these.

We have laid it down in the pit and are getting ready to mount it in place. You can see the base where four spires will be installed.

The last of them is now in place.

Painting is the final step before actually firing up the pump. The water goes into the base and is distributed to each of the four corners, then goes up the PVC pipes in the spires and runs out the top as shown in the top picture.

For the most part, I liked this design on the basis of visual appeal. It created a nice sound but it didn't provide any usefulness for the birds so had to go.

This had a flaw that was common in most of the other fountains. It splashed a lot of water out of the pit so more water had to be added regularly. I didn't try adding lights for this because there wasn't a good way spread the light around each feature.

In all the other cases, I destroyed the fountains completely, but in this case, my wife wanted me to salvage the spires. I mounted two of them in the front yard and one of them later became part of the "Boo Boo" creation described earlier.
